Changes to the Skills and Competencies Taxonomy

SCT 2023 updates

Summary of changes

The 2023 version of the SCT was updated with the following changes:

  • Labels and descriptors were refined across all categories and subcategories to improve clarity and consistency.
  • Minor spelling and syntax errors were corrected.
  • Three descriptors were reinstated. These appeared in the original 2019 version but were removed from the 2022 version due to data issues. As they were not part of the Occupational and Skills Information System (OaSIS), they did not previously have ratings. The reinstated descriptors are:
    • Abilities / Cognitive Abilities — General Learning Ability
    • Work Activities / Information-Oriented Activities — Comparing
    • Work Activities / Mental Process-Oriented Activities — Calculating
  • Two new descriptors were added to the SCT:
    • Abilities / Cognitive Abilities — Form Perception
    • Work Activities / Physically-Oriented Activities — Artistic Designing
  • Endnotes for Holland Codes descriptors were added and their definitions were revised to align the SCT more closely with the OaSIS framework.
  • A new "Foundational Knowledge" subcategory was created under the Knowledge category. "Languages" and "Mathematics" descriptors were moved under this new subcategory.
